This image was my entry for a new remake, up at the Whitechapel forums. This time I’s turn for an X-Men/Freakagels remix. Here’s the rules of the game.

The challenge is simply this:

In a single illustration, capture The X-Men in the style of FREAKANGELS.

Our flooded, steam-powered, post-apocalypse London… with X-Men in it.

You may want to consider that FREAKANGELS wouldn’t be FREAKANGELS without the watery, “cel-shaded” colour design and palette that Paul created.

Also, obviously, that the characters would require a complete redesign to fit into the FREAKANGELS world.

And that’s it.

The X-men are (c) Marvel while the FreakAngels are (c) Warren Ellis.

2000AD Cover Remake

CHINESE WHISPERS UCHRONAL COVER REMODEL; 2000AD PROG 1

Second cover remake at the Whitechapel forums. This time It’s the turn of 2000AD, the science fiction comics magazine. Here’s the rules of the game:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for the first issue of a weekly science-fiction anthology comic called 2000AD.

You don’t know much about what’s in it. You’ve been given the following pieces of information to include on the cover somehow:

“featuring the new DAN DARE”

“M.A.C.H. 1 – his incredible hyperpower will amaze you!”

“SPACE-AGE DINOSAURS! Read ‘FLESH’ ”

“STOP PRESS! GREAT BRITAIN INVADED!”

The cover must include a logo and the numbering, which you’ve been told is not the usual “issue one,” but “Programme 1.”

And that’s it.

It’s up to you what kind of company you’re at. What kind of comics you make. What era you’re in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

It sort of mirrors the truth of 2000AD Prog 1, which was that it didn’t strictly speaking have a cover illustration, as a massive frisbee was mounted on the front cover as a free gift.

Superman

This weeks Remake / Remodel at Whitechapel is a bit different from usual. Here’s the new rules of the game:

“You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called SUPERMAN. It is issue 1 of this book.

You have been told that Superman is a man who dresses predominantly in a shade of blue, and wears a red S symbol. You know nothing else about the character.

The cover must include a logo and the text THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE DARING EXPLOITS OF THE ONE AND ONLY SUPERMAN.

And that’s it.

It’s up to you what kind of company you’re at. What kind of comics you make. How you translate that description of Superman. What era you’re in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

You have one week. Go.”

Last time I checked, Superman was still copyright (c) DC Comics.

Skyrocket Steele

This picture was my entry for one for one of the Remake/Remodel challenges taking place regularly at the Whitechapel forums. The Challenge here was to create a new version of SkyRocket Steele, a character from 1930 that lasted six issues:

“Skyrocket Steele was a hero in the year X. He was assisted by Sari Marston and Invex the Invisible Man. His nemesis was Vance Roy. Skyrocket Steele was the first character created by Bill Everett”.

There’s a 3D streoscopic version on the right, but you’ll need a pair of 3D glasses to see is properly. The red for the left and green for the right kind of glasses, not the ones you get at 3D movies.

Esta imagen fue mi contribución a uno de los hilos Remake/Remodel que se organizan con regularidad en los foros de Whitechapel. El reto aquí, era crear una nueva versión de Skyrocket Steele, un personaje de 1930 que sólo duró tres números:

“Skyrocket Steele fue un héroe en el año X. Contaba con la ayuda de Sari Marston e Invex, el hombre invisible. Su némesis era Vance Roy. Skyrocket Steele fue el primer personaje creado por Bill Everett”

La imagen de la derecha es una versión estereoscópica. Te harán falta un par de gafas 3D para ver el efecto. Gafas rojas y verdes (a izquierda y derecha respectivamente) y no del tipo de las que se utilizan en las salas de cine modernas.

Un encargo que acabo de terminar para http://octobrianacz.blogspot.com/. Vuelve Octobriana, la super vixen soviética de origen incierto. Según un señor llamado Peter Sadecky, fue creada en 1960 por el colectivo ruso PPP (Pornografía Política Progresiva). A saber. Ambas imágenes se incluirán dentro de un calendario impreso bajo demanda, de modo que no perdáis de vista su blog.

(Por cierto que la versión definitiva será ligeramente distinta y Octobriana llevará un puñal kris en la mano, en lugar del rifle. Pero vamos que cogéis la idea.)

Esta ilustración fue mi contribución a uno de los hilos Remake/Remodel que se organizan periodicamente en los foros de Whitechapel. En esta ocasión el reto consistía en actualizar a Zero, el detective fantasma, exterminador de fantasmas diabólicos.

The Spider Queen Remake/Remodel

Esta ilustración fue mi contribución a uno de los hilos Remake/Remodel que se organizan periodicamente en los foros de Whitechapel. En esta ocasión el reto consistía en actualizar a la Reina Araña, uno de los personajes de relleno que acompañaban a ‘The Eagle’, en el cómic homonimo de Fox cómics (1941). Sharon Kane es una luchadora contra el crímen cuyos brazaletes especialmente diseñados disparan telas de araña. Tiene un novio detective llamado Mike O’Bell.

This page was my entry for one of the Remake/Remodel weekly challenges at Whitechapel. The goal here was to create a modern version of the Spider Queen, one of the backup characters that were published in Fox comics’ ‘The Eagle’ (1941). Sharon Kane is the sworn enemy of all criminals. Her specially designed bracelets eject spider webbing. Her boyfriend is a detective named Mike O’Bell.

Vep Vs. Justice Remake/Remodel

Estas dos tiras fueron mi contribución a uno de los hilos Remake/Remodel que se organizan regularmente en los foros de Whitechapel. Por primera vez, dos de los personajes de anteriores Remake/Remodel coinciden en una misma aventura. Vuelven Irma Vep y el Capitán Justicia.

“Irma Vep era la más atractiva de los protagonistas de LES VAMPIRES, un serial cinematográfico en 10 partes acerca de un equipo de ladrones. Era “su miembro más enigmático… una mujer tan bella como implacable y peligrosa”… A Irma Vep se la reconoce como la primera femme fatale del cine. Seduce a las personas para satisfacer sus propios fines y va por ahí robando, enfundada en su mono negro.

Por su parte el Capitán Justicia es un lobo de mar, un “pirata moderno”, un “aventurero de primer orden” cuya guarida -una verdadera maravilla de la tecnología- era una fortaleza de una milla de altura. Contaba con una nave invisible para viajar por todo el mundo acompañado de sus amigos, Midge (su joven asistente pelirrojo) y el Profesor Flaznagel. Desde ciudades perdidas a las profundidades del Sahara, juntos combatían a los malechores allá donde los encontraran.

These strips were my contribution for one of the Remake/Remodel weekly challenges at the Whitechapel forums. For the first time ever, two charecters from previous Remake/Remodel challenges get together in the same adventure.

“Irma Vep was the most striking protagonist of LES VAMPIRES, a 10-part movie serial about a team of burglars. She was “their most enigmatic member by far… a woman as ruthless and deadly as she is beautiful”… Irma Vep is broadly considered to be cinema’s first femme fatale. She’s a moral vacuum, she seduces people to her will in order to control her environment and she steals shit while wearing a black catsuit…”

“Captain Justice is the “Sea Rover,” a “modern pirate,” an “adventurer of the highest order” whose home base, a technological wonder (it had two-way television in it), was a mile-high fortress, Titanic Tower, floating somewhere in the Atlantic. He used an invisible airship to take him and his friends, Midge the red-headed boy assistant (think Sexton Blake’s Tinker and Nelson Lee’s Nipper) and Professor Flaznagel, around the world, from hidden cities to the depths of the Sahara, and to fight evil and wrong-doers wherever he found them.”

Moris Klaw Remake/Remodel

Esta página fue mi contribución a uno de los hilos Remake/Remodel que se organizan periodicamente en los foros de Whitechapel. En esta ocasión el reto consistía en actualizar a Moris Klaw. Creado por Sam Rohmer (más conocido por ser el escritor de Fu-Manchú) este “Detective de los Sueños” es un viejo anticuario con sorprendentes poderes de clarividencia que a menudo ayuda a la policía en sus casos. Con la ayuda del Detective-Inspector Grimsby y de su hija Isis, Klaw resuelve extraños crímenes valiéndose de un método de lo más extraño: echándose a dormir en la escena del crímen.

This page was my entry for one of the Remake/Remodel weekly challenges at Whitechapel. The goal here was to create a modern version of Sam Rohmer’s Moris Klaw, The Dream Detective. Rohmer (who’s better known as the creator od Fu-Manchú) imagined Klaw as an old antiquarian whose clairvoyance powers are often required by the Police. With the help of Detective-Inspector Grimsby of New Scotland Yard and his daughter Isis, Klaw solves unusual crimes by a bizarre method: by sleeping at the scene of the crime.

Ivan Brodsky Remake/Remodel

Este dibujo fue mi contribución a uno de los hilos Remake/Remodel que se organizan regularmente en los foros de Whitechapel. El reto consistía en crear una nueva versión de Ivan Brodsky, el “Cirujano de Almas”. Creado por “Victor Rousseau”, pseudónimo de Victor Rousseau Emmanuel. Ivan apareció en once historias en Weird Tales en 1927 y 1927, empezando por “El Caso de la Hija del Carcelero” (Weird Tales, Sept. 1926).

This picture was my entry for one of the Remake/Remodel weekly challenges at Whitechapel. The goal here was to create a modern version of Ivan Brodsky “The Surgeon of souls”. Created by “Victor Rousseau,” the pseudonym of Victor Rousseau Emmanuel, Ivan appeared in eleven stories in Weird Tales in 1926 and 1927, beginning with “The Case of the Jailer’s Daughter” (Weird Tales, Sept. 1926).
